Cade and Rumblix, sitting in front of the hut

Cade Quarter's hut was the first home that Cade Quarter built for himself after moving to the Farrow Ridges, but it was destroyed soon afterwards. He replaced it with a sturdier cabin, which he resided in for the rest of his time there.

Construction[]

Soon after arriving at the Farrow Ridges and meeting Gart Ironside, Cade Quarter built a tarpaulin shelter by the shore of Farrow Lake, next to a wind-shadowed ridge and a rock jetty[1].

Following the destruction of his rudimentary home by Tug, Cade set about building a wooden hut. He cut down two gladebirch trees and used them to make the three walls of his new shelter, leaving the fourth side open to the lakeshore, curtained by a tarp. For the roof, he used the branches he’d stripped from the trees to form a latticework, topped with meadowgrass-carpeted turf. Though Cade was quite satisfied with his hut, Thorne Lammergyre visited him that evening, and wished him and his shelter luck in the oncoming rainstorm.[2]

Destruction[]

Once the storm rolled in—bringing thunder and lightning—Cade, Rumblix, and their shelter were bombarded with heavy raindrops, hailstones, and brutal winds. The turf became soaked and slumped through the gladebirch lattices, the mud securing the turf in place became saturated with rainwater and melted away, and the wind caused the walls of the hut to sway perilously. The tarpaulin door was ripped from its moorings entirely. Farrow Lake began to overflow, causing waves to crash against the shelter. Due to the encroachment of the waves, the ground outside the threshold of the hut turned to quicksand and the foundations holding up the walls disintegrated. At that point, Rumblix and Cade fled the hut. Cade dove to the ground as lightning struck his hut, setting it ablaze. The lumber he’d built it from shot into the sky, behaving like lit lufwood. Whatever had remained of his home was swallowed by the elements.[3]

In the end, Cade realized that he’d built his hut too close to the lakeshore, that turf was a poor choice for roofing due to the chance of rain, and that the gladebirch timber—though easy to work with—burned too easily[3].

After his realization, Cade came face to face with the “Nameless One”, Tug[3]. He fainted and was taken to Thorne Lammergyre’s home, where Celestia Helmstoft tended to him. Two days later, he stirred from his slumber.[4]
