The Armada of the Dead, called the Armada for short, was a settlement of sky pirates that was established in the First Age of Flight and lasted into the Second Age of Flight[1]. It was in the northern Mire, near the cliff[2], about half a day’s hard mud-marching from where the Great Mire Road entered the Twilight Woods[3].

History[]

After the sky pirate ship Cloudbreaker fell out of the sky because of stone-sickness, Deadbolt Vulpoon called an assembly at Wilderness Lair to decide how the rest of the sky pirates could avoid individually meeting the same fate. They decided to scuttle the whole fleet together in the Mire, which was how the Armada was formed.[1]

For many years, the inhabitants of the Armada sustained themselves by raiding the trade on the Great Mire Road[1]. However, after the dark maelstrom struck Undertown, all trade on the road stopped, and people started to talk about abandoning the settlement. When Felix Lodd and Rook Barkwater arrived and explained the full situation to the sky pirates, most of them decided to help the progress of the Third Great Migration and settle in the Free Glades[4]. The remaining few chose to go to the Foundry Glades instead[5].

Society[]

Organisation[]

Deadbolt Vulpoon was the overall leader of the Armada. He had the authority to dispatch raiding parties and to lock people up. The residents of the Armada were divided up into 30 crews, each averaging about ten members[4], and, when being given orders, those crews were called by the names of their ships[3].

Architecture[]

The sky pirates used their scuttled sky ships as buildings, and they constructed additional rooms on top of the decks and off the sides of the vessels[4].

Entertainment[]

In the Third Age of Flight, people believed that the game of splinters had originated in the Armada of the Dead[6]. The sky pirates of the Armada also had marching songs about Mother Muleclaw the Second and General Tytugg[3].
